Delivery operating model

The client was a market and trading arm of a global natural resources organisation, working for the IT delivery function who were responsible for all application based projects and BaU services. The overall business had grown rapidly, from seven to over 700 people in just three years, and consequently the complexity of the application portfolio that had been developed organically over time, was not delivering as the business required. The client selected KA2 to help them to optimise this important function and meet changing business requirements, without compromising the firm’s agility and their ‘can-do’ culture.

KA2 completed a complete review of their structures and processes and then designed a new operating model. The solution retained successful core agile development processes, but also implemented new service structures and processes around these, delivering:

  • Separated ‘BaU Work’ from ‘Project Work’ policies to create clarity within the business and were designed to speed up ‘small change’ delivery
  • Collated and standardised onto a new process all assessment, prioritisation and stakeholder management through a single ‘front door’ for delivery Services
  • Improved mechanisms for application portfolio ownership at a technical level, with resources rotating between BaU and projects. This enabled better knowledge retention and ensured that all applications are effectively supported.

The new operating model was accepted by all the key stakeholders and has improved delivery at no additional ongoing costs.
